Trans Canada Trail
The Trans Canada Trail is dubbed “the longest network of multi-use recreational trails in the world”. While permitted uses vary by trail location and landscape, the 52km stretch that travels throughout Huntsville is suitable mostly for hiking/walking/running and cycling. The terrain varies throughout the rural and urban sections of the trail as it is sometimes located on natural surfaces in the woods while other portions are on secondary and town roads which are shared with vehicles.
As it works its way up from Utterson, The Trans Canada Trail is located on the west side of Hwy 11. It begins to head East and crosses under Hwy 11 via the 4.6km long Hunter’s Bay Trail. This section is completely vehicle free and incorporates a series of floating docks and natural surface trails with spectacular views of Hunter’s Bay throughout. The route continues over a small section of Main St before heading towards Fairy Lake where it meanders along some neighbourhood roads not far from the shoreline. After crossing Hwy 60 the trail works its way back across to the west side of Hwy 11 at Old North Rd and heads north on secondary roads and eventually back onto a wooded trail towards Novar.
Depending on your mode of travel, completing the entire stretch in one effort may be ambitious. However this route does highlight many unique points of interest as you work your way from the southern to northernmost points of Huntsville’s boundaries.
Hutcheson Beach
Port Sydney Beach
Port Sydney Beach is positioned on the south end of Mary Lake in the adorable village of Port Sydney, and has all the amenities you’ll need to set up for a day of summer relaxation. A gently sloping grassy hill descends into the beach area with plenty of space for sand castles and unwinding. The swimming area is marked off by buoys and is shallow and protected by the L-shaped pier and docks extending out into the lake, making it an excellent spot for younger children. Those looking for deeper waters can enjoy the lower swimming dock attached to the end of the pier which is equipped with several ladders for exiting the water. This is a great place to come and set up your beach chair and read a good book while the kids amuse themselves nearby. The views of the lake and nearby Rocky Island are accented by the dozen or so boats mooring in the adjacent bay.
There are also several picnic tables and benches scattered throughout Port Sydney Beach. A wheelchair accessible swimming area complete with a hard surface extending into the water is accessed by means of a ramp descending from the accessible parking spots in the upper parking area. A stand-alone public washroom building is located in the parking lot. The entrance to the pier features a large pavilion with a picnic table-the premium picnic spot if you’re lucky enough to snag it!
Avery Beach Park
Avery Beach is Huntsville’s in-town beach. Within walking distance to the downtown core, this spot offers many amenities and is a great home base for a day of outdoor activities. Centrally located in the middle of the Hunter’s Bay Trail, you can head in either direction for an out and back hike, both of which will offer a great connection with the nearby water.
The beach volleyball court is located just inland from the water’s edge and is surrounded by grass. Be sure to bring your own ball if you’re looking to host a game with your crew. There is
usually a net set up throughout the summer season. The Rotary Pavilion is set just beyond the trail providing approximately 1000 sq/ft of covered space equipped with picnic tables and specifically one oversized picnic big enough to seat at least a dozen people. Different community activities are often hosted here and it’s a great shady escape on a hot summer day. At the forefront of the pavilion there are several display boards providing information on The Trans Canada Trail as well as plant and animal species found nearby.
The Avery Beach shoreline is fairly natural but there are several breaks with small sandy beaches for swimming and playing in the water. The water is shallow for about 15-20 ft but then drops off. There are several slips for docking boats and further down there is a popular public boat launch. The main parking area is located to the right, just across the railroad tracks as you arrive from Main St. While pet-friendly, dogs must be on a leash and are not permitted on the beach itself. Throughout the summer there are numerous Muskoka chairs in addition to the several wooden Rotary benches which are all positioned with a terrific view of the bay.
