SUMMARY:The Mother and The Bear
DESCRIPTION:After 26-year-old Sumi suffers an accident on the streets of wintry Winnipeg\, her overbearing mother Sara flies in from Seoul to be by her now comatose daughter’s side. As Sara meddles in Sumi’s life via a dating app\, she ends up on a journey that will leave her forever changed. \n In a departure from his previous films\, Chinese Canadian filmmaker Johnny Ma embraces a new mode here\, using suburban Winnipeg as the stage for a stylized\, whimsical narrative of crossed wires\, secret lives\, and conflicting agendas. \n Sara despairs about her daughter’s single status\, so she immediately starts catfishing the pleasant Min to be Sumi’s boyfriend — once she wakes up\, of course — and also gets unwittingly entangled with Min’s estranged father\, Sam\, who runs a Korean restaurant in the city. As Sam and the widowed Sara connect over their mutual melancholies\, a chance meeting with Sumi’s co-worker Amaya leads Sara to learn more about the life from which her daughter has chosen to exclude her. \n A unique mash-up of genres\, The Mother and the Bear marks a bold new direction for Ma. And if you were wondering about that eponymous bear… well\, you’ll just have to see the film.

SUMMARY:Wall-E
DESCRIPTION:100% of Reel Alternatives ticket sale proceeds and film sponsorship dollars raised and will be donated to the student team. \nReel Alternatives is proud to sponsor a special matinee of WALL-E in support of the Huntsville High School Championship Robotics Team — Hoya Robotics. The film for this event was chosen by the students and it’s not only ideally appropriate for the cause but also as appealing\, funny\, heartwarming and relevant as it was when it won both the Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature Film in 2009. \nBring the whole family for an inspiring afternoon at the movies while helping some of the brightest young minds in the world design\, build and compete with their next championship robot right here in Huntsville. This team punches way above their weight on the world stage but they need to raise an annual budget of $60\,000 to do so. \nWhether you purchase tickets\, add a donation at the door or sign on as a film sponsor\, you’ll be helping to fuel innovation\, teamwork\, and the future of STEM (Science\, Technology\, Engineering and Mathematics) right here in our community. \nAbout the film: \nWALL-E is the last robot left on Earth. He spends his days tidying up the planet\, one piece of garbage at a time. He has amassed quite a collection of things including the last living plant.on earth. WALL-E is more than a little lonely until he spots EVE\, a sleek and shapely probe sent back to Earth on a scanning mission. Smitten\, WALL-E embarks on his greatest adventure yet when he follows EVE across the galaxy to a space cruise ship which is carrying all of the humans who evacuated Earth 700 years earlier. Ultimately WALL-E\, EVE and some malfunctioning robots have to find a way to retrieve the plant and save the earth.

SUMMARY:Perfect Days
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Reel Alternatives Huntsville in partnership with Algonquin Theatre \nNominated for the Best International Film Oscar\, Perfect Days is a poignant character study and emotionally charged journey into the soul of Tokyo. Radiating with charm\, this unique mix of fiction and ordinary life finds an unusual\, poetic angle to guide us: the architectural marvels of some of Tokyo’s public toilets. \nKôji Yakusho plays Hirayama\, a cleaner of these toilets. Hirayama lives alone in a small house full of plants\, his days going by according to quiet rhythms that never seem to change. Hirayama speaks very little and has a great passion for music\, books\, and the trees he loves to photograph. He drives to work in his minivan\, fully equipped with his cleaning gear\, while The Rolling Stones\, Patti Smith\, or Lou Reed ring in ageless\, husky hums from a tape player. His structured routine is slowly interrupted by unexpected encounters that force him to reconnect with his past. \nAs if in search of a new cinema on the road\, director Wenders follows his protagonist and instead discovers new places of the heart\, creating a deeply moving\, poetic reflection on finding beauty in the everyday world around us. \nTICKETS

SUMMARY:The Zone of Interest
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Reel Alternatives Huntsville in partnership with Algonquin Theatre \nNominated for five awards at the 2024 Academy Awards\, including Best Picture\, Best Director\, and Best Adapted Screenplay\, Jonathan Glazer won the Oscar for Best International Film and the Grand Prix at Cannes ’23 for this chilling film about Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höss and his wife\, who quite literally live amongst the ashes of their actions. \nAdapted from the novel of the same title by Martin Amis\, The Zone of Interest centres on the domestic life of Hedwig (Sandra Hüller\, Anatomy of a Fall) and Rudolf Höss (Christian Friedel)\, whose family home nestled between train tracks and gas chambers is spitting distance from Auschwitz\, the infamous German concentration camp located in occupied Poland\, where Rudolf serves as commandant. \nTowards the final days of the Holocaust\, Hedwig is fixated on self-preservation and creating a slice of paradise for her family\, while Rudolf is increasingly burdened by his duties. We reside inside the family’s encampment\, with background voices of ghost-like prisoners muffled by the perpetrator’s quotidian musings. Shot on location\, The Zone of Interest weds banal and overt acts of evil with unforgettable reminders of resistance (it was shot in monochrome by thermal-imaging cameras). Dispassionately examining the ordinary existence of people complicit in horrific crimes\, The Zone of Interest forces us to take a cold look at the mundanity behind an unforgivable brutality. \nTICKETS

DESCRIPTION:EZRA – A Reel Alternatives Film Screening  \n\nSeptember 9\, 2024 – 7pm\nAlgonquin Theatre\nTickets – $10\nPurchase at: https://tickets.algonquintheatre.ca/TheatreManager/1/tmEvent/tmEvent1748.html\n\n\nBobby Cannavale and Robert De Niro hit the road in this star-studded and heartwarming comedy about stand-up comics and stand-up parents — or at least those trying to be. \nNew Jersey comic Max (Cannavale) tells stories\, not jokes\, about ordinary chaos — with there being no better source of chaos in his life to pull from than his son with autism\, Ezra (William A. Fitzgerald). Finding himself at odds with doctors and ex-wife Jenna (Rose Byrne)\, Max packs their bags and brings both his father (De Niro) and Ezra on a cross-country trek to Los Angeles\, where Max has been promised a spot on Jimmy Kimmel Live! \nBoth an unpredictable family dramedy and a road movie that runs on mischief\, the latest from director Tony Goldwyn showcases Cannavale\, De Niro and Byrne as three adults with wildly divergent opinions about what’s best for one precious little boy. The film also features an astonishing ensemble cast\, which counts Oscar nominee Vera Farmiga and Oscar winner Whoopi Goldberg among its ranks.

SUMMARY:The Great Escaper starring Michael Caine - A Reel Alternatives Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Based on a true story that made global headlines in 2014\, The Great Escaper stars Michael Caine as 89-year old WWII veteran Bernard Jordan who snuck out of his care home to attend the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landing in Normandy\, France. The late Glenda Jackson plays Bernard’s devoted wife who covers up for him as much as possible and encourages him to follow his destiny. \nAfter the local police were notified of his absence\, the care home got a call that evening to say that Mr. Jordan had been found safe and well in France. He returned a few days later having made his way to the event. It was a story that captured the imagination of the world as Bernie embodied the defiant\, “can-do” spirit of a generation that was fast disappearing. \nBut of course\, it wasn’t the whole story. It was an inspirational but sanitized retelling of one man’s need to come to terms with the lasting trauma of war. Bernie’s adventure\, spanning a mere 48 hours\, also marked the culmination of his 60-year marriage. The Great Escaper celebrates their enduring love without sentimentality and with an eye to the lessons we might learn from the Greatest Generation. \nTICKETS

SUMMARY:The Queen of My Dreams - A Reel Alternatives Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Against the backdrop of a shared obsession with Bollywood fantasy\, Mariam\, a Pakistani Muslim woman\, and her Canadian-born daughter Azra come of age in two different eras\, in two very different ways but with a common connection. \nAzra is a Pakistani woman living in Toronto whose openly gay relationship and pursuit of an acting career is worlds apart from her conservative Muslim parents. When her father suddenly dies on a trip home to Pakistan\, Azra finds herself on a Bollywood-inspired journey through memories\,both real and imagined\, from her mother’s youth in Karachi to her own journey to adulthood in rural Canada. \nWhile her stern mother\, Mariam\, demands that Azra play the role of the perfect grieving daughter\, we see the connections uniting mother and daughter through flashbacks to Mariam’s own life in Karachi 30 years before\, starting with their shared love of the Bollywood star Sharmila Tagore. \nWriter/Director Fawzia Mirza’s energetic first feature explores the chasm between individual desires and cultural expectation\, showcasing a great dual performance from Amrit Kaur as both Azra and the younger Mariam. As the older Mariam\, veteran actor Nimra Bucha\, whom audiences may recognize from Ms. Marvel\, harmonizes with Kaur we see hints of the woman Mariam used to be within the person she’s become. Cinematographer Matt Irwin (CBC’s Sort Of) gives the 1969 sequences the vivid primary colours and lighting of the era’s Bollywood movies while keeping the 1999 material more subdued and naturalistic. Editor Simone Smith (a Canadian Screen Award winner for I Like Movies) shuffles us confidently between the two time frames. Azra might feel lost\, but this movie knows exactly where it’s going. \nTICKETS

SUMMARY:The Old Oak
DESCRIPTION:Ken Loach’s final feature takes place in and around a pub in a northern English village\, where not all of the locals are welcoming to newly arrived refugees from Syria. \nTICKETS \nThe future is uncertain for the Old Oak\, the last remaining pub and last remaining social space in a quiet working class town in Northern England. While it was once a thriving mining community\, years of neglect have left the town barren with empty homes on every street. These houses are cheap and available\, making this town ideal for Syrian refugees. Racism and narrow-minded attitudes towards any newcomers are the standard in the town. \nSeveral scenes focus on stark and uncomfortably real conversations between townsfolk seething about immigrants potentially entering their community. Tensions rise after the racist mob requests to use the back room of the Old Oak as a meeting place to air their grievances\, but the owner\, TJ Ballantyne (Dave Turner)\, refuses\, knowing this will only encourage more hateful speech. Meanwhile\, he strikes up a genuine friendship with one of the refugees\, a young woman named Yara (Ebla Mari) who is bright\, passionate\, and interested in creating a life for herself in this new place. \nThe Old Oak is director Ken Loach’s self-reported final film and is infused with his signature social realism. A hopeful appeal to better natures\, this film argues for compassion and solidarity in the face of racism and xenophobia. \n“[Loach] could hardly have delivered a more resonant\, timely or indeed angry swansong than this feature which takes up arms against the decay of national compassion.” –Jonathan Romney\, Screen International \nDirector: Ken LoachUK\, France\, Belgium 2023 \nPrincipal Cast: Trevor Fox\, Debbie Honeywood\, Dave Turner \nEnglish\, Arabic | 119 minutes  \nContent advisory: depictions of racism; violence; coarse language

SUMMARY:Better Days
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Reel Alternatives Huntsville in partnership with Algonquin Theatre. \n“Better Days” \nApril 29th at 7:00pm\n$10 tickets online or at the door \nIn this comedy from writer/director Joan Carr-Wiggin\, newly widowed Kate (Sonja Smits) must start over after losing her husband of over 30 years. \nBroken by the loss\, Kate withdraws into a bottle of vodka—and her husband’s Halloween costumes. Feeling lost and alone\, she soon befriends three local teenagers who are fascinated by her enthusiasm for dressing up. But\, as she and her new friends bond\, Kate’s family become increasingly concerned. Suddenly\, Kate doesn’t seem like the woman they once knew and they begin to demand that things go back to ‘normal’\, whatever that means. \nBetter Days is a fascinating blend of contradictions that seamlessly blend together. In some moments\, Days is irreverent\, dark and genuinely hilarious. In others\, it’s contemplative with a furious soul. Even so\, this constant pivot between tones somehow feels… honest. \nBut much of the success of these Days is due to a remarkable performance by Smits as the grieving Kate. By leaning into the madness of the moment\, Smits is absolutely on fire from beginning to end. This is a film that delves into the chaos of grief and\, as a result\, requires a chaotic performance but she knows exactly when to hit the right notes. (In fact\, the most stable moments of the film come as Kate speaks directly to the camera. Here\, she’s able to clearly communicate her feelings\, as though we are the only ones who are truly willing to listen to her heart.) \nWhile her feelings take on many forms\, Kate’s struggle to survive her grief is far more than simply trying to cope with the sadness over her husband’s death. Instead\, Days is as much about revival as it is about mourning. As she processes the overwhelming nature of her feelings\, she starts to figure out what it means to begin again. Because\, maybe\, there actually are Better Days ahead. (Excerpts from Screenfish)

SUMMARY:Joan Baez I Am A Noise
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Reel Alternatives Huntsville in partnership with Algonquin Theatre. \n“Joan Baez I Am A Noise” \nMarch 18th at 7:00pm\n$10 tickets online or at the door \nAt the end of a 60-year career\, legendary singer and activist Joan Baez takes an honest look back and a deep look inward as she tries to make sense of her large\, history-making life\, and the personal struggles she’s kept private. \nFamous at 18\, on the cover of Time magazine by 21 and dubbed the “Queen of Folk\,” by the early 60s\, Joan Baez was bigger than any folk singer who had come before. She became the icon of a new generation of musicians\, from Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen to Bob Dylan and Patti Smith. But it was her political passion as much as her prodigious talent that made her a legend. Long before ‘celebrity activism’ was cool\, Baez used her influence and commitment to non-violence to relieve suffering and fight injustice. \nJoan Baez: I Am A Noise is an intimate psychological portrait of the legendary singer and activist anchored in her extraordinary archive but including newly discovered home movies\, diaries\, artwork and audio recordings. Baez is remarkably revealing about her life both on and offstage—from lifelong emotional struggles to her civil rights work with Martin Luther King to a heartbreaking romance with a young Bob Dylan. \nA searingly honest look at a living legend\, the film is a deeply personal exploration of an iconic artist who has never told the full truth of her life until now. – (Hot Docs)

SUMMARY:Jules
DESCRIPTION:Jules follows Milton (Ben Kingsley) who lives a quiet life of routine in a small western Pennsylvania town but finds his day upended when a UFO and its extra-terrestrial passenger crash land in his backyard. Before long\, Milton develops a close relationship with the extra-terrestrial he calls “Jules.” Things become complicated when two neighbors (Harriet Sansom Harris and Jane Curtin) discover Jules and the government quickly closes in. What follows is a funny\, wildly inventive ride as the three neighbors find meaning and connection later in life – thanks to this unlikely stranger. Ben Kingsley’s quietly powerful performance drives this slight yet affecting crowd-pleaser from director Marc Turtletaub that puts a lighthearted science-fiction twist on its exploration of aging\, mortality\, regret\, and loneliness. \nThe film effectively blends quirky humor with an underlying message about appreciating our seniors into a silly yet warm-hearted package. A modern day E.T. with a feel good story\, just right for the Christmas season. \nTICKETS

SUMMARY:You Hurt My Feelings
DESCRIPTION:A novelist’s longstanding marriage is suddenly upended when she overhears her husband giving his honest reaction to her latest book. Starring the brilliant\, and often very funny\, Julia Louis-Dreyfus the films deals with the depths of relationships and how seemingly strong foundations can be partly or fully fractured for the simplest of reasons. You Hurt My Feelings is a story about moderately happy people who are pretty good at holding everything together until they come face to face with the truth. Holofcener nimbly explores the limits of honesty and whether the piety of positivity is really all it’s cracked up to be. Holofcener’s work in this subtle\, thematic film is deceptively masterful\, darkly comedic\, and oh so familiar. \nTICKETS

SUMMARY:Past Lives
DESCRIPTION:Two deeply connected childhood friends\, Nora and Hae Sung\, fatefully reunite in New York City after being wrested apart 20 years ago\, in this decades-spanning romance from writer-director Celine Song. The story begins in South Korea\, where 12-year-old Nora is preparing to emigrate with her family to Canada. But she is leaving someone dear behind: Hae Sung\, her closest friend. By this time\, Nora is married to a writer named Arthur (John Magaro) and Hae Sung is newly out of a long-term relationship.  Past Lives is a delicately layered triptych that confronts destiny\, love\, and the choices that shape a life. SUMMARY:Are You There God? It's Me\, Margaret.
DESCRIPTION:When Margaret’s family relocates from the city to the suburbs\, she not only has to contend with a new life\, but also new friends and the new changes to her body that come with the beginning of adolescence. Based on the bestselling novel from Judy Blume\, Are You There God? It’s Me\, Margaret\, this film adaptation tells the seemingly universal story of what it means to grow up and find out who you are and what you believe in. Poised as one of the best coming-of-age book adaptations to date (with a Rotten Tomato score of 99%)\, Margaret is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. \nComing from a half-Jewish and half-Christian family\, yet raised atheist\, Margaret starts asking her father and mother (Rachel McAdams) about these big existential questions. Questioning her faith and identity\, she visits her grandma (Kathy Bates) and attends Temple\, but that doesn’t quite fit. One of her friends takes her to Church\, but that doesn’t feel right either. While it seems like every other kid has their identity figured out\, Margaret feels stuck in the middle\, unable to grow up until she answers these questions definitively. Not only will fans of the now 50-year old book find this adaptation faithful\, but it will also speak to today’s adolescents who will see themselves accurately depicted on screen.  \nTICKETS

SUMMARY:Blackberry
DESCRIPTION:(See the original movie before the CBC series to see which you like better!) In the late ’90s\, Research In Motion was just a humble tech outfit selling modems in Waterloo\, Ontario. Best friends and co-founders Mike Lazaridis (Jay Baruchel) — a soft-spoken tech whiz who’s the brains of the operation — and Douglas Fregin (Matt Johnson) — a headband-donning\, nerve-grating goof — are trying to sell a product they call PocketLink\, a never-before-seen combination of cellphone\, email device\, and pager. The telecom world isn’t impressed with Mike and Doug’s invention\, but a domineering\, foul-mouthed salesman named Jim Balsillie (Glenn Howerton) is. Jim sees the device’s potential and brokers a deal to acquire part of RIM in exchange for cash and business expertise. What follows is the gut-wrenching and side-splitting story of the meteoric rise and catastrophic fall of the world’s first handheld computer. BlackBerry is a Canadian story told with tremendous national pride by Canadian talent. The three visionaries at the centre of this tale\, despite their device’s ultimate descent into obsolescence\, changed the way the world communicates today. \nTICKETS
